Guiding Light! Will the road you are on get you to my place? It is commonly believed that men hate to admit they are lost enough to stop and ask for directions. Call it pride, call it the need to be in control, call it a fear to admit weakness - we've all seen it in action enough times to know that there is a spark of truth in the charge. One comedian even suggests that the real reason the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for forty years is that Moses refused to stop and ask for directions. This of course does not square with any Biblical history, but it does raise a smile. When men and women live the busy lives that most of us do, there is little time to stop and ask. We just plunge ahead and hope that we won't discover a dead end somewhere down the line. The fact is that this way of living is crazy. How many dead ends have to be encountered before we stop and ask? Where does the road you're on lead to? What's your life-destination? The top? (Whatever that is.) The good life? (Whatever that means.) The perfect place? (Wherever that is.) Perhaps it would be smart to exercise a habit of regularly stopping to evaluate our location and direction of life-travel. The Jewish people call this kind of pause "Sabbath." Thousands of years of experience have demonstrated for them that a weekly pause is a good idea. "Six days you shall labor and do all your work," Israel's God said, "but the seventh day is holy; on that day you shall do no work." The reason? It was time designated to look backward and see where one had come. It was time designated to look deep into the heart and ask what one truly believed. It was time designated to look to the future and see if the road about to be taken was the right one. God knew they needed regular time to answer His question: "Are you on the road to my place?" Christian people then and now believe that there is more to life than death. They easily embrace the conviction that there is somewhere glorious on the other side. Jesus told his disciples that He was preparing places there for them. The Bible, reaching for adequate descriptions, calls it "a city of mansions." We call it Heaven - it's God's place. Sounds wonderful! Getting there means checking the road we're on right now, and the direction it's taking us. If we miss the turn, we may miss His place. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way."
