My way is the highway!

What sort of a boss is he, someone wonders. The answer comes back, "Oh, he's one of those "My way or the highway" types. Those five words, when they're spoken, we know exactly what kind of a person is being described. The highway, we understand, it is not a happy place. It means you're out, fired, booted, canned! It means you've had an encounter with a micro-manager, a know-it-all, a dictator, and now you're gone.

Consider however, a simple twist of the words which might offer a superior thought. In its everyday context, the highway is a good place to be. It goes somewhere, requires few stops, allows high speed, and is designed for maximum safety. The highway, not a bad place if you're going somewhere.

God has a way for us. He would say, "My way is the highway." The writers of the Bible understood His way and in explaining it, made it clear it's not the way of most people in the world. God's way does ask something of us: commitment, trust, obedience, service. Too many use life's journey for the pursuits of self and what might be gained along the way. God's way is incompatible with theirs.

Unfortunately, too many of these people come to the end of their way before they are willing to submit to God's way. Crisis, disappointments, defeats, these often cause us to seek a better way. In the end, many will choose His way, sometimes regretting they did not seek it much earlier.

Jesus called His way the "narrow way" another kind of play on words. The "narrow way" acknowledges difficulty, challenge, demand. It requires something of a person, his or her entire life. But it also is a highway. Few find the "narrow way," Jesus says, but those who do are assured and confident that it leads to the right destination.

Recently a private plane carrying three notable people flew into thick haze over the ocean. The pilot, apparently disoriented, must have forgotten to observe or trust his instruments or he would have known that he was moments away from disaster. The instruments would have shown him the way, but he chose his own, and disaster struck. There's a message here for us. God's way is the best way, the only way, the true way. It's the highway. Don't miss the on-ramp.

This "foolish" plan of God is far wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God's weakness is far stronger than the greatest of human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:25

"You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. Matthew 7:13
